Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the correspondence of Aaron M. Sewell from 1862-1864. The correspondence consists of 35 letters of Sewell and 14 letters of his wife Louisa and other relatives. All of Sewell's letters were addressed to his wife, but some contained notes to his father-in-law, brother-in-law and other members of the family. Letters to him, other than those from his wife were from a soldier, P. R. Dorsett - or Dorset - and from his brother S. C. Sewell (Cicero). There is one letter from Burton Yeargon, a soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia, to his cousin Louisa. All of the letters, which cover the period May 3, 1862 through June 17, 1864, were written while he was in the Confederate Army.
The letters are divided into two groups. Group I is composed of letters written by Aaron M. Sewell. Four letters were written in 1862, between May 18 and December 29 from Clinton and Chattanooga, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama. There were 15 letters in 1863. The first was on January 2 from near [Bluntsville]. The next 5, written between January 27 and March 28 were from Vicksburg, Mississippi. On July 8 Aaron wrote a letter from Petersburg, Virginia. The remaining 7 letters were from camps in North Georgia. In 1864 there were 16 letters. Between January 8, 1864 and March 23, there were 10 letters from camps in Georgia. He wrote 5 letters from near Dalton, Georgia between April 4 and May 11, and on June 17, he wrote the final letter from near Marietta.
Group II is composed of letters of Louisa (Mrs. Aaron M.) Sewell and other connections of the Sewell and Dorsett families. From Louisa there are 7 letters, between April 1862 and 1864. There are three from his brother S. C. Sewell between April 2, 1862 and March 28, 164. One is from Mrs. Harriet Dorsett, May 25, 1862; one from J. L Bo--, September 11, 1862; one from M. R. Dorsett, April 14, 1863; and one to Mrs. Louisa Sewell from her cousin Burton Yeargan, March 28, 1864.

Biographical Note
Aaron M. Sewell, Confederate soldier, was born about 1840 in Chatooga County, Georgia, and died near Marietta, Georgia, in June 1864. He served as a private in the 39th Georgia Infantry Regiment near Chattanooga and Knoxville, Tennessee (summer 1862), Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. He aided in the defense of Vicksburg, was captured at Champion's Hill and sent to Ft. Delaware (May 1863), and remained in parole camps until exchanged. He was near Dalton, Georgia (winter 1863-1864), helping oppose Sherman's march south when he was killed in fighting.
