Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of James Solomon Peters from 1927-1970. The papers include printed material, photographs, subject files, biographical material, correspondence, scrapbooks, certificates, plaques, a motion picture, a screenplay; audio tapes, resolutions, a diploma, and a cartoon. Materials pertain to Peters' life and career and include information on Manchester, Georgia, and Georgia education. Photographs depict Georgia Governors Sanders and Griffin, Beaver Dam School (1906), and Peters' Board of Education retirement banquet (1971); the cartoon is of Peters. The audio tapes are interviews with or about Peters. The motion picture and film script is "Mr. Jim - The Life and Changing Times of James Solomon Peters." Most awards pertain to Peters' career in education.

Biographical Note
James Solomon Peters, educator and politician, was born March 21, 1884, in the Lois District of Berrien County, Georgia, and died December 6, 1974, in Manchester, Georgia. He graduated from Emory College (1904) and taught in Hahira, Georgia, before moving to Manchester (Meriwether County), Georgia and going into banking (1909). He served on the Meriwether County Board of Education (1914-1939); was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives (1933-1939); member of the Georgia Democratic Executive Committee (1941-1957; chairman (1948-1956); member of the Georgia Senate (1957-1958); member of the Georgia Board of Regents (1941-1942); member of the Georgia State Board of Education (1949-1971); and also served on the Georgia University and Public School Building Authority (1959-1971).
