Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of James A. Mackay from 1963-2002. The papers include correspondence, clippings, photographs, and speeches. Materials concern his congressional campaigns, term as a United States Congressman, his service on the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee, the passage of the Traffic Safety Act of 1966; the subcommittee on Public Health and Welfare; his childhood, education, and marriage; and various Atlanta and Georgia organizations in which he was active, including the Georgia Conservancy (which he helped found), Fernbank Science Center, and the Atlanta Bar Association

Biographical Note
James Armstrong Mackay, congressman and attorney, was born June 25, 1919, in Fairfield, Alabama. He married Mary Caroline Lee. He was a DeKalb County, Georgia, representative for six terms from 1951-1952 and 1955-1964, and served as a United States Congressman from 1965-1967. He received a law degree from Emory University (1947), where he later taught law courses and served on the Board of Trustees. He worked as an attorney in Decatur, Georgia. He died in Hamilton, Tennessee on July 2, 2004.
